Pack smart for your mountain hike
How you pack your backpack can determine whether your hike will be an enjoyable experience or a challenge that takes its toll on both your body and your mood. With the right preparations, your trip will be both easier and safer.
Plan your packing in advance
Thinking through what you really need before you set off is crucial – both to avoid unnecessary gadgets and to ensure that you don't miss anything important. The season, terrain, and length of the trip will affect what you should bring. Are you hiking in the summer or is it an autumn hike? Are you going to hike in the Swedish mountains or abroad? Winter trips require completely different equipment compared to a lightweight hike in the summer. One suggestion is to go through your pack when you return from your trip and identify items you didn't use. Ask yourself if these are really necessary for your next trip. Dare to try leaving them out once and see if you can manage without them. Don't compromise on safety; first aid supplies are needed when you least expect it, so make sure you always have them with you.
A good way to keep track of your packing is to write a list and collect your packing plans in a digital document, for example in Excel, where you can have separate tabs for different types of hikes. Lay out all your equipment before you pack to get a clear overview. Do you need everything you planned to bring, or can you reduce the weight?
Another way to keep track of your packing is to use digital online tools. Our favorite is Lighterpack, which is free, simple, and effective.

The basic principle: Dry, warm, and full
A simple rule of thumb to ensure a comfortable and safe hike is to stay dry, warm, and full. Pack clothes for all weather conditions – waterproof and windproof garments, clothes for hiking, and a dry change of clothes to put on at the end of the day. Wet clothes quickly cool down the body, so pack underwear and socks in waterproof bags (liners) or dry bags to always have dry options ready.
At the same time, it is important not to pack too much. For example, choose one really good thermal shirt instead of carrying two. By staying dry, warm, and well-fed, you not only reduce the risk of hypothermia – you also ensure that you can enjoy the hike to the fullest.
Accommodation and cooking during the mountain hike
In addition to clothing and equipment, you need to plan how you will sleep and cook during the hike. Which tent is best suited to the terrain and weather conditions where you will be hiking? Do you have a sleeping bag and sleeping pad that will keep you warm in the temperatures you can expect? Are your storm cooker and burner suitable for the hike?
Choosing the right equipment is crucial for a safe and restful night. Your pack should help you stay dry, warm, and full—and give you energy for the next day. Test all your equipment at home before you set out, so you know how it works. If you are unsure, you can always ask us for help in finding the right tent, sleeping bag, and stove for your needs.
Inspiration
Below are some examples of equipment kits to check out!
Safety in the mountains
The mountain environment can be unpredictable, with rapid weather changes, long distances, and tough terrain. An easily accessible and well-thought-out first aid kit is a must. In addition to medical supplies, extra clothing, a whistle, underwear, and hiking poles can also be important safety items. A thermos with hot drinks and energy-rich snacks can provide both warmth and strength in an unexpected situation. Once again, good planning is the foundation for a safe and secure hike.
Pack your backpack correctly
A well-packed backpack makes hiking more comfortable and balanced. Think about when you will need different pieces of your equipment and pack accordingly. Try out different solutions at home, and use packing bags or packing cubes to keep things organized and quickly find what you need.
Place heavy items (tent, food, kitchen) close to your back and centered to create a stable center of gravity.
The center of gravity should be at chest height to provide balance and reduce the strain on your shoulders and back.
Make the tent easily accessible by packing the tent fabric rolled up with any tent poles in the middle—this makes it easier to set up camp quickly when needed. Although the basic principle is not to have anything on the outside of the backpack, it can still be a good idea to have the tent on the outside of the backpack. A modern lightweight tent takes up very little space and usually fits perfectly on top of the backpack. Most modern backpacks have fasteners for tents and other larger items.
By packing carefully and testing your equipment before departure, you will have a smoother and safer mountain hike.
Pack smart and light
Packing thoughtfully and consistently makes it easier to find what you need – even in bad weather. Sleeping bags, sleeping pads, and other sleeping accessories should be easily accessible when it's time to pitch the tent.
Side pockets are the perfect place to quickly access important items such as first aid kits, water bottles, rain gear, snacks, and phones. Use packing bags, preferably in different colors, to keep things organized and make it easy to find what you need. Also, remember to pack a dry change of clothes in a waterproof dry bag.

Food and essential items in the mountains
To simplify meals during the hike, food can be packed in portion bags, one for each day. This makes it easier to plan and quickly find the right meal. To save both weight and waste, it is also a good idea to repack freeze-dried food in heat-resistant plastic bags. See our Inspiration section for more information.
The first aid kit should always be easily accessible. If you share a common kit, it is wise to have the same person carry it throughout the trip and keep it in a specific place in the backpack so that it can be quickly accessed when needed.
If you or someone in the group is taking medication, it is a good idea to inform the group and clearly indicate where the medication is stored so that it can be easily found in an emergency.
Choose the right backpack for the hike
A good backpack in the right size makes a big difference to the hiking experience. Always test packing it in advance.
You can attach equipment to the outside of the backpack; sleeping pads made of cellular plastic and tents are good examples. Backpacks are available in models designed for both women and men, with different carrying systems for optimal comfort. Always try it with a full pack to see how it fits on your back.
